The complete wedding photography shot-list checklist

Every wedding photographer eventually builds their own shot-list. This one is a starting point — the must-haves you can't forget on an 8-hour wedding day. Print it, customize it, leave it in your camera bag.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Getting-ready phase (60–90 min)

Dress on hanger detail, shoes, rings, invitation suite flat-lay, hair and makeup candids, dad/partner reaction to first look, bride/groom with parent, bridesmaids/groomsmen candids, veil or jacket fitting.

  2. 2

    First look (15–20 min)

Wide environmental, close-up reaction, hands-and-face moment, walking-away wide, couple alone three-quarter, couple alone full-body.

  3. 3

    Ceremony (30–60 min)

Empty room wide, processional individual frames, vow exchange close-up, ring exchange hands, kiss (multiple angles), recessional wide.

  4. 4

    Family formals (20–30 min)

Work the published shot list; work largest group to smallest. Delegate the shot-list caller role to a wedding planner or family member.

  5. 5

    Couple portraits (30–45 min)

Two locations minimum; get a wide establishing shot, a three-quarter, a close-up, a detail (rings, hands, bouquet).

  6. 6

    Reception (3–5 hours)

Room empty before guests, first dance (3 angles), parent dances, cake cutting, toasts (listener reactions matter), candid dancing, exit shot.

What to skip

Ninety percent of wedding galleries don't need: table centerpiece close-ups, every guest's drink, posed 'fun' group shots that weren't requested.

The more you try to cover everything, the more you miss. Work the emotional beats hard; skip the inventory shots.

Gear you will actually use

Two bodies. Two fast primes (35mm and 85mm cover 90% of the day). One zoom for ceremony reach (70–200mm). Two flashes for reception. Six batteries. Twelve memory cards. Don't bring gear you haven't used in the last month.
