How the calculation works
We start with a benchmark hourly rate for your specialty in your market tier. Large metros (NYC, LA, SF, Chicago) carry a multiplier of ~1.5–2x vs. smaller markets.
Experience multipliers: 0–2 years yields 0.7x, 3–5 years is 1.0x, 6+ years is 1.3–1.5x.
Target income: your desired annual take-home multiplied by ~1.4 to account for business expenses and taxes. Divided by realistic billable hours per year (typically 600–900 for a full-time photographer).
Package pricing adds 15–25% margin on top of the hourly-equivalent to account for pre- and post-production time not visible to the client.
